Film blog Shadow & Act is reporting that former Saturday Night Live alumna and Bridesmaids star Maya Rudolph will return to primetime TV next month.
Rudolph, who appeared on SNL for over a decade (from 2000-2011), will debut the Maya Rudolph Show on May 19.
According to reports, the project will be an update of the classic variety show, featuring comedy skits and music performances by Rudolph and several guests. So far The Office’s Craig Robinson; SNL alums Andy Samberg, Fred Armisen, and Chris Parnell; Frozen’s Kristen Bell; and Will & Grace’s Sean Hayes are slated to appear on the one-hour special.
Singer Janelle Monae will perform, and former Tony! Toni! Toné! front man Raphael Saadiq will serve as the show’s bandleader.
The Maya Rudolph Show will premiere just days after the conclusion of Zoe Saldana’s Rosemary’s Baby miniseries on NBC, making a special time for women of color on the network.
At the moment the show is set to be a one-time special, but if it garners strong ratings, I’d wager NBC would turn The Maya Rudolph Show into a regular series.
