A man is out on $10,000 bond after being charged with bear hugging a 14-month-old to death. Robert Christian Kemp of Orangeburg County, South Carolina was charged with involuntary manslaughter in the 2013 death of Jaylen Harris.
Kemp reportedly called the police on June 23, 2013, and told authorities that the baby died in his bed, while he was doing housework. Kemp said that at he put the child into the crib on his back and with a bottle. As he was cleaning, he became worried after not hearing anything from the child’s room. After checking up on the child, he found the baby on his stomach, with his hands balled up in a fist.
After a year long investigation, deputies determined that Kemp gave the victim a bear hug, squeezing the child so tightly that the boy stopped breathing.
In a statement posted last year on a website called GiveForward.com, the child’s family described Jaylen as “the sweetest, happiest baby you would ever meet. He was a blessing and a joy to this family.”
