Jon Stewart deserves an award. Can you give an award for having a privileged white male admit there is such a thing as white privilege? That’s what Stewart got Bill O’Reilly to do recently when he was a guest on The Daily Show.
Stewart comes right out of the gate and asks O’Reilly (who has long denied the existence of white privilege) to admit that there is white privilege. It’s on and popping after that!
First, O’Reilly tried to say that because there’s no more slavery or Jim Crow and the most powerful man in the world is a Black man and the most powerful woman in the world is a Black woman. No, it’s not Michelle Obama. It’s Oprah Winfrey. Jon Stewart retorts, “just because you can give someone a free car doesn’t make you the most powerful.” Hello!
Stewart went on to school O’Reilly on the systemic inequities in America that have a deeper impact on Black folks. He asks O’Reilly about the neighborhood he grew up in where GIs were able to get housing at an affordable rate. Stewart asks if Black people were allowed to live there. O’Reilly admits not at that time. “That’s white privilege, my friend,” Steward says. “But it was 1950!” Ok, sir. And your point is what?
While Stewart got O’Reilly to admit to the existence of white privilege, O’Reilly just couldn’t admit that black Americans are disadvantaged in any way. You know all you have to do is work hard and you too can make it. At one point O’Reilly said, “You think I’m sitting here because I’m white? What are you, a moron? I’m sitting here because I’m obnoxious, not because I’m white!”
Well it’s probably a combination of both.
