While many of us thought Lupita Nyong’o’s short cut was a style choice it turns out, not so much. In an interview with Redbook, the actress revealed why she shaved her head.

When asked,Is it true that you shaved your head when you were 19 because your hair was damaged from chemical treatments?”

She replied, “Yes! But it wasn’t on a whim—I spent days thinking about it first. Once I did it, it was very liberating, but I also felt very naked. When you feel the wind on your scalp, it’s like, Oh, my God. But I’ve kept my hair short ever since.”

Black girls around the world could relate to having to chop off their tresses as a result of damaged hair. Nyong’o is no different.

Nyong’o also said, “It’s easy. As a teen, my hair caused me so much anxiety. When I wasn’t happy with how my hair looked, I’d spend recess in the bathroom because I was so embarrassed.”

Those of us part of team #shorthairdontcare can relate to how great it is to get up and go as a result of rocking a crop do.

In addition, Nyong’o dished on her skin care regimen, how she’s come to really embrace bold makeup colors and more.

I think that Toni Braxton has a similar story about her hair. Both ladies wear the short hair well.

I love Tonis finger waves I don’t know how she gets them though. I think someone said relaxer.

  • There is nothing like feeling the wind on your scalp! Getting a fade was the best thing I’ve ever done to my hair.
