Last year veteran models Naomi Campbell and Iman joined former model and casting agent Bethann Hardison’s “Diversity Coalition,” a campaign that called for an end to the blatant absence of models of color on the catwalks, an unfortunate trend pegged as “runway racism.” The trio penned letters to major fashion councils to bring light to the sobering fact that models of color are grossly underrepresented in the fashion industry.
For that reason, it’s all the more refreshing to see the honey-hued Aya Jones ranked among the crop of this season’s up-and-coming, fresh-faced models. Named one of Spring 2015’s top 10 new models by Style.com, the 20-year-old Parisian recently made her runway debut in Milan where she walked exclusively for Prada. Jones’ first showing proved successful as the doe-eyed, full-lipped beauty returned to her hometown to walk in several other shows, including Valentino, Giambattista Valli, Miu Miu, Nina Ricci, Viktor & Rolf and Maison Martin Margiela.
Represented by Paris’ Silent Models and The Lions New York (home of Agyness Deyn and Irina Shayk) the 5’9 ½ French-Jamaican showstopper joins the ranks of Chanel Iman, AJak Deng, Jourdan Dunn, Sessilee Lopez, Joan Smalls and other high fashion black models to strut their way into the heart of fashion lovers worldwide.
Not too much is known about the model just yet. A quick perusal of Jones’ Instagram page reveals scarce activity, save for three photos of the model posing with British makeup artist Pat McGrath and fellow Lions model Irina Liss. But given her impressive debut, her page will likely be overflowing with a collection of enviably fierce modelesque snapshots in no time.
