HBO has released the official premiere date for the Dee Rees biopic chronicling singer Bessie Smith’s life. “Bessie”, which stars Queen Latifah as the legendary singer, will air on May 16 at 8 p.m. The movie will touch on Smith’s life, including the fact that she was bisexual.
After writing about being blackballed by Hollywood, it’s interesting to see that Mo’Nique will be playing one of Smith’s lovers, who happened to be a legend as well. Mo’Nique will tackle the role of Ma Rainey in the biopic. The blues singer was just one of Smith’s side-pieces, even though she was married to a man. Smith even hinted about her sexuality in her music.
“When you see two women walking hand in hand, just look ’em over and try to understand: They’ll go to those parties — have the lights down low — only those parties where women can go,” was from her song “The Boy In The Boat”.
It’ll definitely be interesting to see both women as these amazing performers.
