A student at Duke University came forward as the person responsible for hanging a noose on campus. Very little information was given about the unnamed undergraduate student at a Duke press conference Thursday night. But school officials stated the student was no longer on campus.

According to the Associated Press, the student will be subjected to Duke’s student conduct process and the school is working with state and federal officials about potential criminal violations.

The noose was discovered early Wednesday morning and images were posted on Twitter.

Duke’s President Richard Brodhead assured a crowd today that the situation is under investigation but it’s up to each individual to reject racism.

“One person put up that noose, but this is the multitude of people who got together to say that’s not the Duke we want,” Brodhead the crowd. “That’s not the Duke we’re here for, and that’s not the Duke we’re here to create.”

And the question remains, why wasn’t the student’s name release?

These kind of incidents will do so much to help HBCU recruitment, even if they are not a particularly common experience.

It just makes parents and students think about some of their “other” options. Not saying HBCU’s need to take advantage of the negative but, they certainly should be out front promoting the many positive of their institutions.

Based on the lack of information the student was WHITE. Transparency is needed!

We certainly need transparency. That action is a blatant violation of the University’s code of conduct policies. That action is hurtful to black people and anybody who abhors racism. Regardless of the person’s name, that person ought to truly experience justice. There is no place for someone to hang a noose from a tree inside of an University at all. We, as black people, are not tolerating this.
