Screen Shot 2015-07-24 at 1.27.33 AMJay Z and Will Smith have once again joined forces to executive produce a HBO miniseries based on the life and death of Emmett Till. The 6 hour miniseries has yet to be titled but currently the search is underway for someone to pen the series.

The last time Jay Z and Smith worked together was on Annie, which starred Quvenzhane Wallis.

Till was killed in 1955 while visiting relatives in Mississippi. Till was tortured by a group of men after they assumed he was flirting with a white woman. Till was only 14-years-old at the time of his murder. Till’s mother, Mamie, refused to have a closed casket funeral, and Till’s casket is now on display at the Smithsonian Museum.

Till’s murderers were acquitted in his death, but years later admitted to killing him under the shield of double murder.

It’ll be interesting to see the direction the miniseries will go in, and the casting of Till will definitely have a role to be remembered.

Emmett Till’s story was a tragedy. It also inspired a new generation in the civil rights movement. Any miniseries should be based on historical accuracy and it should educate people fully about the injustice of the killing of a child by racist brutes. It will be interesting to see how it will turn out. I do hope that the miniseries will educate people, be accurate, and expose the viciousness of racism, so society can change for the better in the future. There is the 2003 great documentary called “The Murder of Emmett Till” too.
