Black Lives Matter activist and blogger Shaun King finally spoke out about the controversy surrounding his race via a post on DailyKos.

“The reports about my race, about my past, and about the pain I’ve endured are all lies,” wrote King.

“I refuse to speak in detail about the nature of my mother’s past, or her sexual partners, and I am gravely embarrassed to even be saying this now, but I have been told for most of my life that the white man on my birth certificate is not my biological father and that my actual biological father is a light-skinned black man,” he said.

Conservative attack website Breibert thought they unearthed the next Rachel Dolezal earlier this week when they posted a hit piece about King, more than likely to discredit his activism work.

King blasted Breibart, The Blaze, talk show host Glenn Beck and other conservatives, saying they don’t care what color he is, they only want him to “shut up.”

He also compared his situation to President Obama’s “birther” controversy.

“In essence, what is happening to me now, is like conservatives demanding Obama’s long form birth certificate,” he tweeted.

From what I’m reading, the answer is he doesn’t know one way or the other. Sounds like mom is/was a liar to some extent and possibly promiscuous to boot. None of that reflects on Shaun, but it does leave him as just one big question mark. That said, it doesn’t seem like he’s trying to Dolezal folks, just that the best information he has may not be accurate. I see no reason to persecute him for that if he does turn out to just be white, but if he does, he needs to be prepared to update his bio. That makes me wonder how anyone would react to finding out they are the complete opposite of what they thought they were all their lives. Imagine finding out you’re just a dark skinned white person all along… Sheesh.

I actually don’t find this that strange because I have heard this type of story, or known people with similar stories.

My old boss who was always so found of calling white folks devils had the same background as Shaun. It wasn’t about his mother being promiscuous it was about the father not being around to claim the child after the fact.

I don’t trust Breibart since their agenda all along is about ending the Black Lives Matter movement. Shaun King’s statements are eloquent. The truth is very important to promote. His story is not uncommon, because many people have traumatic family histories and race can be a complicated issue. I think that he is trying to show as much information possible since his family history is a personal one. A lot of people would not want to publicly disclose their ancestry in such a personal fashion. He or Shaun is not hiding. He is very transparent about what he has been told about his ethnic identity, which is different from Dolezal (who blatantly used overt deception and lies as a way for her to mock black womanhood). If it is found out truly that he is white or biracial, then that truth must be told. What is most important is to continue in the fight for justice. The fight will never be easy. There will be bumps in the road, but we are committed to ending oppression in our communities and in our world.
