When New York-based designer and blogger Paola Mathe wanted to live out her superhero dreams, she knew she needed some help.

“I wanted to be a superhero, but I didn’t want to be alone and I needed their help,” Mathe wrote on her blog, Finding Paola. “I had a whole story, and the more I thought about it, the clearer it came. They all immediately agreed to join me in my superhero adventure, so I texted a photographer friend of mine to confirm our underground shoot.”

Mathe, who runs Fanm Djanm, a headwrap brand that draws inspiration from the African diaspora, enlisted four of her friends and Aaron Pegg, a photographer known for shooting in the NYC subway system, to create a badass editorial right in the heart in Gotham City.

Dressed in slick black suits and rocking closely-cropped hair, Mathe said the shoot felt empowering.

“I showed up at Hudson Yards subway station that night feeling more powerful than ever,” Mathe explained. “Clad in black with layers of leggings, body suits, fringe gloves, and harnesses, we were ready to take the night!”

Mathe continued: “These women are inspiring badass dream catchers. They make me feel better just being around them.”

They make us feel better, too.
