The Chicago police officer involved in the 2014 shooting death of Laquan McDonald was charged with murder today, the Associated Press reports.
Officer Jason Van Dyke, 37, was charged with first-degree murder at a bond hearing expected to be held later on today. It’s been 35 years since a cop was charged with first-degree murder for an on-duty fatality, The Chicago Tribune stated.
This week will also see the release of dashcam footage taken during the shooting on Oct. 20, 2014. The video allegedly shows McDonald walking away from officers while holding a knife. According to people who’ve viewed the video, Van Dyke shot McDonald 16 times in the back. Autopsy reports show that McDonald was shot at least twice, and he also had PCP in his system, according to the AP.
