Complex

The season premiere of vh1’s flagship reality television program, Love & Hip-Hop New York, aired December 14. Noticeably absent from the premiere episode was Cardi B., 23, a former stripper turned Instagram sensation, aspiring rapper, and party hostess. Cardi B.’s reputation precedes her. The Trinidadian and Dominican’s Instagram account has accrued 1.2 million followers because of her audacious discussions about life, love, sex, and even social justice.

Cardi B. doesn’t posit herself as a role model, as she recently told Complex Magazine. She also isn’t tasked with filtering herself to appease people who think all women should dress modestly to earn respect. Cardi’s building a brand that’s authentic and honest. That is most on display on Instagram, so we’ve compiled a list of her videos that offer a message worth listening to.

This is a head-scratcher right there! Leave this ish to MTO, Bossip, and WSHH.

Exactly, my sentiments exactly. That’s why I like podcast they are an excellent alternative for me. I need Clutch to do better.

Same here! Lately I’ve been listening to podcasts as well. There are indeed a good alternative.

I just discovered Cardi B. a couple of days ago and I love her. I’m surprised by the negative comments towards her since, to me, she represents many of the folks that I grew up with in the hood: foul mouth, loud, blunt, but she speaks truth. It may not be in the manner Clutch readers think she should, but she is from the hood. Let’s not act like she isn’t apart of the diaspora and doesn’t represent some of our people. I just came back from my hometown after a 2 week stay and I was appalled at the level of ignorance my family members and neighbors spewed from their mouths, but this one, she has self-awareness and best believe, the hood is listening to her. Go Cardi B.!
