Looks like everyone jumped the gun a bit the other day when they reported that Beyoncé was planning to write and star in her own movie about the life of Saartjie Baartman. After one too many stories circulated on the Internet, Bey’s rep put out a statement saying:
“Beyoncé is in no way tied to this project. This is an important story that should be told, however.”
While this news may disappoint some of you, one person that is likely pleased is Chief of the Ghonaqua First Peoples of South Africa, Jean Burgess. When asked about the rumored movie project, he told News 24 in South Africa:
“She lacks the basic human dignity to be worthy of writing Sarah’s story, let alone playing the part. Ignoring the fact that the KhoiKhoi is alive and that Sarah’s story would have an impact on how we are portrayed, is a mistake of great magnitude. Why Sarah Baartman? Why not a story about an Indigenous American woman? I can only see arrogance in her attempt to tell a story that is not her’s to tell.”
From the sounds of things, Bey already knew better than to attempt that.
