First Lady Michelle Obama graces the latest cover of Seventeen Magazine looking every bit of lovely in blush pink and electric red. Inside, she discussed the importance of finding the college/university to best fit one’s needs.

“When it was time for me to apply to colleges there were some counselors who said, ‘Maybe, with Princeton, you’re reaching a little high,’ ” she recalls. “And I thought, ‘You really don’t think I can do it?”

Michelle Obama went on to graduate from Princeton University cum laude and then attend Harvard’s prestigious law school. Her oldest daughter Malia is set to start her freshman year of college this fall and while there is no word on where she will attend, she has narrowed it down to two choices: Barnard College and New York University.

As for college advice, the First Lady said she focused on supporting her daughters and helping them make a decision that was right for them – not one that conformed to outside pressures or other’s expectations for their life.

“The one thing I’ve been telling my daughters is that I don’t want them to choose a name,” the first lady said. “I don’t want them to think, ‘Oh I should go to these top schools.’ We live in a country where there are thousands of amazing universities. So, the question is: What’s going to work for you?”

It would have been really exciting to see Malia on the cover as well but we’ll take what we can get. You can read the rest of the interview here.
