It’s been a minute since we’ve actually seen Lupita Nyong’o’s face on the big screen. After winning an Oscar in 2014 for Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave, Nyong’o had a brief role in Non Stop, played an alien in Star Wars, voiced a wolf in the Jungle Book, and starred on Broadway. While Nyong’o has remained a style maven, her on-screen time has been quite limited. But all that is changing this fall.
Later this year, the Kenyan actress will star in Disney’s Queen of Katwe, a film about Ugandan chess prodigy Phiona Mutesi. Nyong’o will play Harriet Mutesi, Phiona’s mother, and many are already talking about the project’s award potential.
A joint project between ESPN and Disney films, the film also stars David Oyelowo and newcomer Madina Nalwang, and is slated to hit theaters on September 23.
