Though we won’t see Samira Wiley on “Orange is the New Black” anymore (sorry for the spoiler!), the actress is very much still a part of the family — literally now that she’s engaged to one of the show’s writers.
Samira has been in a relationship with Lauren Morelli since 2014 and yesterday the couple broke the news that they’re now engaged to be married on each of their Instagram pages. From Samira’s caption it looks like Lauren is the one who popped the question to which the actress eagerly replied “yes.”
And Lauren shared the same photo on her Instagram account, equally elated about the new chapter in their life.
Interestingly, it wasn’t until Lauren began writing for the hit Netflix series that she realized she was gay. The show writer wrote about her experience discovering her sexuality a few months into her marriage to television writer Steve Basilone in an essay on Mic.com in May 2014.
“Five months after my wedding, I flew to New York to start production on my first episode of Orange, and from that moment on my life fell into a parallel rhythm with Piper’s story in a way that went from interesting to terrifying in a matter of months,” she wrote. “I realized I was gay in fall 2012, one of my first days on the set. It wasn’t so much one thing, but the sum of many small details,” she added. One of those details happened to be falling in love with Samira, which devastated many fans who fell in love with the actress from afar as well (you should see the things people write on her IG pictures.) Unfortunately, those admirers will have to catch Samira onscreen-only in her upcoming shows, “You’re the Worst” and “The Handmaid’s Tale,” the 29-year-old is officially off the market.
