“I’m petty af, yes. But this is just unnecessary!” — Rihanna
If you haven’t heard, Beyoncé got a slew of Grammy Award nominations yesterday for her Lemonade album. Beyoncé lead the nominations with nine nods for her album. Not only is she up for Album of the Year, but also Song of The Year, as well other awards in the pop category (“Hold Up,” pop solo performance), rock (“Don’t Hurt Yourself,” with Jack White, for rock performance), R&B (“Lemonade,” for urban contemporary album) and rap (“Freedom,” with Kendrick Lamar, for best rap/sung performance). “Lemonade” was also nominated for best music film, and “Formation” for best music video.
But of course, fans of Rihanna thought those nominations were a slight to her own popular album Anti.
Rihanna was overlooked for Album of the Year but her Drake collaboration ‘Work’ was nominated for Record of the Year but not Song of the Year, receiving eight nods overall.
Of course people on the internet sees everything, and someone spotted Rihanna liking an Instagram photo shading Beyoncé :
But the singer responded and said that wasn’t the case at all:
Rihanna spoke the truth. Whether your a fan of Beyonce or Rihanna, or neither, black women have a hard enough time getting respect, and it doesn’t make any sense to pit them against each other.
Rihanna and Beyonce have both praised each other’s work, and have never seemed to have beef with each other….so why not leave it at that. Members of the Bey Hive and Rihanna Navy need to realize that you can like both, without putting down the other.
